T
he Marian Friary Our Lady Help of Christians
in Toodyay began the official opening of the community in December 1997 in the Archdiocese of Perth. The first two missionaries from the United States, Fr. Joseph Michael McShane and Friar Pio Pante came to reside in a former Sisters of Mercy convent constructed over 100 years ago.
At the beginning the convent was abandoned and needed repair to be habitable. The friars, after working continuously for six months with the help of several lay volunteers, finally took refuge in the new friary.
Currently, the friars take care of the retreat centre and the formation of vocations as well as spiritual assistance to the local parish of Toodyay with daily Masses and offering the sacraments. Oftentimes they travel to Perth to help out in the many apostolic activities of their other friary located in Munster.
