T

he Marian Friary Our Lady Help of Christians in Toodyay began the official opening of the community in December 1997 in the Archdiocese of Perth. The first two missionaries from the United States, Fr. Joseph Michael McShane and Friar Pio Pante came to reside in a former Sisters of Mercy convent constructed over 100 years ago.

At the beginning the convent was abandoned and needed repair to be habitable. The friars, after working continuously for six months with the help of several lay volunteers, finally took refuge in the new friary.

Currently, the friars take care of the retreat centre and the formation of vocations as well as spiritual assistance to the local parish of Toodyay with daily Masses and offering the sacraments. Oftentimes they travel to Perth to help out in the many apostolic activities of their other friary located in Munster.

Apostolate of the Community

  • Retreat Centre
The friars maintained the Retreat Centre which is open both for individual and group retreats. Offering spiritual conferences and sacraments when requested, the friars provide an opportunity especially for young people to discern a vocation in a religious atmosphere. For more information about the retreat centre and how to make a reservation please follow this link.
  • MIM Lay Association
In keeping with the spirituality of their Institute, the friars organise and form lay associations which follow the spirituality of the friars and sisters according to the lay state. Their monthly meeting consists in participating in the Liturgy, Marian and Franciscan conferences, reception of the sacraments as well as spiritual direction. For more information on this association, please follow this link.
  • Annual Corpus Christi Procession
As an annual event, the friary hosts the inspiring Corpus Christi Procession. It is a procession where the Real Presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist is processed in the streets of Toodyay accompanied by prayers and hymns of the lay faithful. This takes place every year on the Feast of Corpus Christi.
  • Sacraments and Services

    Holy Masses are offered on:
Weekdays: 7:30 AM in St. Pio's Chapel
Sundays: 8:00 AM in St. John the Baptist Church
